The Moment
January 22, 2009 To commemorate Barack Obama’s inauguration as the 44th President of the United States, CNN has assembled a collage of photos submitted by the public. Using Photosynth from Microsoft, the photos from around Capitol Hill have been combined together to allow us to view this historic occasion from a multitude of perspectives. It’s a giddy experience, and almost makes you feel like you were there.
Here’s a different but equally awesome angle (pun intended) on Barack Obama’s inauguration.
David Bergman created a 1474-megapixel image of Obama’s inaugural address by mounting his Canon G10 on a Gigapan Imager. This is a robotic camera mount that takes multiple images, then stitches them together to make a single gigantic photo. Starting from way way back, you can gradually zoom in until you can see individual faces, with very little loss of resolution. This may lead to new variations of “Where’s Waldo?” For example, try to find Yo-Yo Ma snapping a photo with his iPhone.
I’m still not over the inauguration. Being such a historic moment, it was probably the most photographed event ever, so it’s no surprise that there are a lot of really great pictures out there. The Boston Globe has put together a really nice collection as part of their Big Picture series.
